What EMPs Need Now: A COVID-19 Follow-Up Survey

BY: JENNIFER FORD

As the pandemic drags on, our world as Emerging Museum Professionals (EMPs) continues to shift. We faced new work, education and internship realities when COVID-19 hit in March 2020. But almost eight months later, our day-to-day looks a little different than back then. That’s why the GOEMP Committee wants to learn how we can continue to support you.

WHAT WE’RE DOING

From April to May 2020, the GOEMP Committee conducted a survey with Ontario EMPs to find out what you needed from us during the crisis. And boy did you respond! With 122 responses, the survey painted a clear picture of your needs in the early days of the pandemic.

You wanted 1) more EMP-centred resources and support; 2) digital professional development opportunities and 3) sector-related updates about COVID-19. Based on your responses, we developed a number of new GOEMP initiatives, including:

WHERE WE’RE GOING

But a lot has happened since the first COVID-19 survey. Museums have reopened, a new academic year has started, financial support has shifted – our March 2020 world is a little different than our November 2020 one.

This is why we are now conducting a follow-up survey to make sure we are still on the right path with supporting EMPs in the province. Have things gotten better for you? Have they gotten worse? Do you feel like the community is there for you?

We want to hear about your experiences and what you would like us to do next. Please also share this survey with your friends, colleagues and networks. The more we know, the better we can do. We encourage you to take 5-10 minutes and let us know what you think!
